Agribusiness
The Firm’s investments in agribusiness include United California Citrus,
Inc. (“UCC”) and San Ysidro Vineyards LLC (“SYV”).
UCC is principally engaged in farming approximately 1,200 acres of citrus (navel
and valencia oranges, and lemons) in Fresno County, California. SYV is principally
engaged in farming approximately 382 planted acres of wine grapes (chardonnay,
merlot and pinot noir) on two properties located in Santa Clara County.
Additionally, from 1989 through 2006, the Firm had a joint venture in PT
REA Kaltim Plantations, one of the largest palm oil plantations in Indonesia.
This greenfield project, located in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, was successfully
developed to over 18,000 hectares prior to divestiture by the Firm, and
continues to operate today.
Medical Communications
In 1996, the Firm acquired the US medical publishing business of Reed-Elsevier. This
business, which operates as Quadrant HealthCom, Inc., is a leading medical
multi-media communications provider. Quadrant’s products include
monthly journals, websites and other digital offerings, live events and custom
medical education communications. Specialty physician markets covered
include dermatology, emergency medicine, family practice, obstetrics and
gynecology, neurology, pulmonary and psychiatry. Quadrant also targets
physicians in the health systems of the Veterans Administration and Department
of Defense, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Revenues
derive primarily from pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies. Further
growth is planned through the acquisition of additional medical communications
companies and the continued development of digital and live event offerings. Add-on
acquisitions in recent years have included the professional medical journal
operations of Jobson and Lebhar-Friedman.
